List of Musicians from Other Cities that play in LA now and then

Los Angeles Blues Bands List

Any dates listed can and do change. Check with the venue to verify the date.

I know it is hopeless to compile a list of bands that play blues in LA but I thought I'd see what I could do. I'm sure there are major blues bands that are missing and there are bands on here that wouldn't want to be classified as "blues" so I'll apologize in advance.  Leave a message in the forum or e-mail bluesmiller@earthlink.net with additions and corrections.

Buck Wildstar Schedule

C

Cadillac Zack Band Cadillac Zack, the Massachussetts native, currently resides in Los Angeles, but spent much time on Chicago's blues scene during his musically formative years as well  Zack came under the spell of Chicago's latter-year "West Side" school of guitarists, typified by Jimmy Dawkins, but incorporating elements of everyone from old-school Eddie Taylor to young turks like Johnny B. Moore and others too numerous (and obscure) to mention. He was also strongly influenced by a non-performing, but vital figure from Chicago's blues history: Narvell "Cadillac Baby" Eatmon. Cadillac Baby was legendary on the Chicago scene for years, a hustler driven by his devotion to the blues, who over the years ran nightclubs and at least a couple of record labels, along the way taking a roll of the dice by recording almost everyone who wasn't tied up with Chess or Vee Jay...and probably a few who were. It's in the entrepreneurial spirit of Cadillac Baby that his namesake Cadillac Zack has sought out the best and most authentic unknown blues people across the country, with the hopes of capturing the "real thing" while it's still possible.

Cafe R&B Schedule  Café R&B's unique style includes a variety of original music highlighting the rhythm and blues genre. The lead singer, Roach, has uncanny vocalizations that have been labeled as a blend of Aretha Franklin, Bessie Smith and Etta James. The band performs regularly in Los Angeles and has made appearances in Chicago, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Barcelona and London. (Ritz Carlton)

Candye Kane Schedule Candye's live show is the stuff of legend. She honors the bold blues women of the past with both feet firmly planted in the present. She belts - growls - shouts - croons and moans from a lifetime of suffering and overcoming obstacles. She'll deliver a barrelhouse blues tune or a soulful ballad and then slay the crowd with her balls out rendition of "Whole Lotta Love" Led Zeppelin style. She often says she is a black drag queen trapped in a white womans' body and she dresses the part. Bedecked in bright colored feathers, sequins and rhinestones, Kanes' performance is Mississippi by way of Las Vegas with a quick stopover in San Francisco.

Carlos Guitarlos Schedule Blessed with a gruff but heartfelt singing voice and possessing a huge vocabulary of guitar chops, he performs like a rogue angel. With his long grey hair spilling out from under a fedora and an easy smile that suggested a lifelong mistrust of dentists, he looks and sounds every inch the battle-scarred survivor.

CJ and The Hustlers We are a culmination of four musicians who are influenced by many of the great blues artists. Sonny 'B' (drums) and Harvey Titanium (bass) provide the foundation for CJ Linnett, who delivers fine vocals and lead guitar. To round out the band, we have Michael Turner on harp. We perform a variety of blues styles that groove and create some fresh new ones with our originals.

Clarence Bucaro By no means an ordinary singer-songwriter. He was equally inspired by soul greats like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone and the great American songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. The 24 year old from a small town in the heart of the Snow Belt in Northeastern Ohio's music blends soul, jazz, rock and folk with ease, uniqueness, and something extraordinarily modern.

Deep Pocket myspace epitunes Deep Pocket began years ago as a hard core, 5-piece, blues band. We have also been through several singers and various instrumentalist, but only one drummer, John. Fat Danny & The Hard Tymz Hard Tymz Blues Band is one of the oldest Los Angeles Blues bands still in existence. The Hard Tymz were started in 1975 by Danny Bennett and Mike Burnes. The two met in high school and found they shared a common love for the Blues. The name of the band comes from the depression-era Charles Bronson movie about a tough New Orleans streetfighter. Unlike many performers that are content to recycle the Blues music of yesteryear, Danny looks upon the Blues as a living, breathing form of music relevant to today. His songs strike a common note with all who hear them.

Imperial Crowns

Ironman Mike Curtis "It's a guitar, bass, harp and drum combo, except the Iron Man just goes into the studio and plays all the instruments himself ... at the same time! Surprisingly, he pulls it off with strong vocals, fat harp tone and clean guitar work. (Did I mention he plays nasty slide too?) As you'd expect, he sneaks in some neat little unison guitar licks with harp, and sometimes with his vocal line. The guy is cookin". BLUES ACCESS magazine

Harman's roots are apparent in his recordings and live performances. He is a disciple of the classic qualities of the Southern blues tradition. Still, like his mentors, Harman is telling his own stories. He knows the difference between innovation and imitation, and his own character as a blues artist is fully reflected in his work. In all cases, he remains true to his credo: Strictly the blues.

Thee Rhythm Kings Thee Rhythm Kings, since their inception in June of 2003, they have been burning up up stages all over Southern California. Words such as "powerful" and "electrifying" are often used to describe their shows. The band sound is unique in that not only are they strongly blues based, but also contain elements of Jazz, Funk, Rock, and Latin Rhythms. When you witness a Rhythm Kings show, a great deal of the music is improvised one way or another with some or all of the mentioned influences. The covers that the Kings play are not 100% reproductions of the original, rather they have a unique way of making the songs their own, this being done with no rehearsal, or planning. They just play with soul and emotion. The originals they do are done the same way. A sketch is done, and everyone puts their contribution, like a good pot of menudo, with all the ingredients thrown in. The song then takes life.

Toni Dodd and Southbound Blues Band Schedule Their music includes a well blended mix of blues, R&B, swing, jumpblues, Texas boogie and secondline. In addition, they have their own "brand" of well crafted original material.

Zac Harmon & The Mid South Blues Revue  2004 International Blues Competition 1st Place Winner, Originally out of rural Mississippi, Zac and his Midsouth Blues Revue recently took the W.C. Handy Awards by storm...simply by playing their blues with feeling. He's not only a great vocal artist, he's a studio-level guitarist and ace songwriter for the likes of Freddie Jackson, Evelyn "Champagne" King, The Whispers, Brian Wilson, and the O'Jays.

Zac has been expressing an unbiased love for music for more than 20 years. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, he is a disciple of the Farish Street blues sound, which is famous for many great blues legends including the late Elmore James. In 1980, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He worked as a studio musician and began to make a name for himself as a writer/producer. Later, while composing songs for a movie score and performing those songs in the studio, Zac decided to pursue his dream of recording his first blues project. - Ritz Carlton

He caught the attention of Rod Stewart, Tom Petty and the Eurythmics – all of whom he recorded and toured with. He also caught the attention of Dr. Dre, Barry White, Ziggy Marley, Yes, Bon Jovi, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Macy Gray, Jaguares, and countless others who sought out Jimmy Z’s blazing harmonica and soulful saxophone to spice up their recordings
